Floriade: Tiptoeing through the Tulips

Just as Arrowtown has an auntumn festival when the leaves change colours, so Canberra has a spring celebration when the flowers bloom. In the case of Floriade, however, most of the bulbs are planted specifically for the festival, and then removed when it is over. Many locals object to this as they would rather focus on natural flora. Too recently arrived to become ensnared in local politics, I just like the pretty colours.

All the flower beds are planted to various themes and designs, which can be seen from above - hence the purpose of the Ferris wheel. From below they are simply a riot of chaotic colour, and I like that.

This display of the Crown Jewels (reated by Michael Woods) to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee is fairly unambiguous.
